PROJECT - Appalatch Factory + Showroom

Synthesizing industrial heritage with radical transparency, this architectural proposal reimagines the traditional factory floor as an ecological theater of craft for sustainable knitwear pioneer Appalatch. The design deliberately rejects historically insular factory culture, choosing instead to dissolve the rigid boundaries between production, community, and nature. By organizing the showroom and weaving facility as a continuous spatial narrative, the architecture transforms the rhythmic choreography of the making process into a living backdrop for the retail experience.

This sense of transparency is heightened by a permeable building envelope that blurs the line between interior and exterior, inviting the creative energy of Asheville's River Arts District deep into the structure. Rather than treating nature as mere ornament, the design weaves native Appalachian vegetation directly into the building's infrastructure through integrated interior courtyards and living walls. These biophilic elements actively soften the acoustic profile of the machinery and filter the air, creating a restorative environment that challenges the mechanized preconceptions of industrial spaces. Ultimately, this project stands as a poetic, forward-thinking model for sustainable industrial architecture, where honest materials and living ecosystems merge to mirror Appalatch’s core values of environmental stewardship and radical openness.
