Kenilworth Renovation
Asheville, North Carolina

The project is a partial renovation and addition to a 1934 bungalow adjacent to Lake Kenilworth. Compounding modifications over its life have resulted in a haphazard assemblage lacking any singular gesture of coherency. The design strategy was to seek a simplicity of form derived from existing structural alignments and materiality to preserve the character favored by the owner. The resultant form yields a unity of continuous interior space connected to the exterior via large openings and exterior ‘rooms’ while functional delineation is achieved by the terracing of individual spaces in direct response to the topography on which it is sited.
