South Slope Live-Work Sanctuary

Conceived as a fluid intersection of domestic life, creative production, and culinary theater, this architectural proposal introduces a progressive live-work sanctuary to Asheville’s vibrant South Slope district. Designed for an artist and an architect, the building transcends the traditional boundary between private refuge and public gallery, embodying a theory of architecture as an active cultural catalyst. The structure functions as a living canvas, utilizing a raw, honest material palette that mirrors the industrial grit of the neighborhood while establishing a highly refined, light-filled interior.

Spatial poetry guides the interior layout, where the programmatic shifts between private living quarters, creative studio spaces, and a state-of-the-art demonstration kitchen are marked by subtle changes in volume, light, and materiality rather than rigid partitions. The kitchen serves as a communal hearth, designed to celebrate and engage with Asheville's burgeoning culinary scene through intimate gatherings and collaborative tastings. Seamlessly integrated into the local creative ecosystem, the entire space is curated to showcase the work of regional artists and furniture designers, transforming the home into an immersive exhibition space during regular studio walks. By blurring the lines between the act of making, the art of cooking, and the poetry of dwelling, this South Slope Asheville modern architecture project redefines urban live-work design as a deeply integrated, community-facing art form.
